I have huge problems with politicians and trust them all about as far as I can throw them. I never had any love for the Clintons or the Bush family who were in office in my formative years… By the time the Obamas entered onto the scene I had long lost complete faith in this country and was preparing for mad Max thunderdome… I am neither a Republican nor a Democrat because I think they are all broken and both contributed to the layers of broken in our nation.
I voted for Obama in 2008 for two very specific reasons. First, I believe that the three branches of our government should be a balance between liberal and conservative views and another Republican in office after 8 years of Bush would have disrupted that balance in the Supreme Court. And healthcare… We have always been lucky to work at businesses with excellent healthcare packages many times at the expense as of decent pay. My mother has worked her whole life to provide for me and my sister. I thought that if anything happened to her medically and she lost her job and insurance, my sister and I would take care of her as she did for us our whole lives but wouldn’t it be wonderful if she had to leave work then then there would be something in place for her. She has always lived paycheck to paycheck since my father left her with nothing but her girls and her crazy committed and perfectionistic work ethic literally saved us all. I mean she can work circles around all of you. Every single one of you…. If you don’t know, now you know…
Anyway, I didn’t even vote in 2012 because don’t even get me started on the Bullshit to change state residence and get a license in Baltimore. I won’t get into it but it involved three day that I took off work, misinformation about proof of residence requirements, and a request that my husband come down with a written letter proving my residency. Hell no, sir…
Also in the 8 years he was in office, I was busy AF. I completed two masters degrees while teachingfull time, had two babies, moved across the country twice, worked at 4 different schools in 2 cities holding a different position within the school system each year (2nd ELL, 4th ELL and then mid year inclusion, mnps numeracy coach, 3rd ELL model classroom teacher and instructional coach, reading and math teacher for elementary and middle private school for children with dyslexia, while helping in the final stages to open a public charter school in Baltimore city), all the while struggling with post partum depression and severe anxiety.
Needless to say, I paid very little attention to much of anything but survival. And when it all caught up with me in the great debacle of 2013 when I had to stop and renegotiate my life, I was so jaded by everything I was not a fan of anyone or anything in politics. I blamed them all for the flames and I still do.
Now here’s the rub, I could list a whole slew of problems I had with Obama’s policies and decisions. Give me any politician’s platform and I can do that. I am loyal to no public person or party. But Barack and Michelle Obama were good people. People I would invite to my home for dinner and heated intelligent debate. Tommy and I would have made something yummy and Caribbean and we would have had a Spotify playlist going and they would know the songs and sing along. Their daughters would be awe inspiring for my daughters and would be given a grand tour of our home, paying special attention to Snug and Ity’s room and toys. An evening where you say the next day how lovely it was and that we need to get together more often.
And the love. That love that Tommy and I have where it just keeps getting bigger and bigger every day. That pure adoration. And how all of that love flows to their girls as it does to ours. The beauty of a family head over heals in love with each other!!
And then that love spilled out upon Americans and it lifted us up in the eyes of the world. There was never a question about his love or his adoration for all our country has to offer. And Michelle’s grace and power and calm intelligent ferocity.
It was a pleasure to follow them personally and watch that beauty and have our girls see that the president and his family of girls had just as much love and longing for justice as we have around here. Good people doing hard work for the people. Not perfect by any means but with intention to leave the American people with even more freedom and justice for all.
Their legacy will be raised in high esteem even more so now than in any other transition of Presidential power in decades. My family for one is grateful for the example and values they exhibited and will watch for their light and love as a beacon in the coming darkness.
